monthly roundup: february 2023

tv
Law & Order SVU has completely consumed my life. I'm currently on the beginning of Season 12 (I know..) and I am a full blown Bensler truther. It is taking extreme self control to not head into their ao3 / tumblr tags until I am caught up. But there is so much character development!! It's also super fun to see all the guest stars, I think almost every working actor has been on some Law & Order ep.

books
26/50 goodreads challenge
Since I post in a romance subreddit I'm not going to go list every book I've read but my highlights of the month:
Poppy War #1 by R.F Kuang - 5 stars
This took me a while to really get into because I usually have to carve out entire days for more serious books like this, but I was totally gripped by it. Rin is a great protagonist (who does not love an angry girl) and the little bits of development with Nezha was unexpected and far more romantic than I anticipated. Me? Liking Enemy to Lovers, amazing. I don't know how I feel about the ending and the decisions Rin makes, but we'll have to see where the rest of the series goes. I am taking a short break between starting book 2 bc these books make me feel so much but I'll have to get back in it before I put it off too long.

The Dark Space Trilogy
by Lisa Henry - 5 stars
Shared consciousness is one of my favorite fic tropes and this is a military sci-fi series where the main characters must share heart beats as one of them acts as a sort of pacemaker (for previously captured by alien reasons) to the other & they gain shared consciousness because of it. The forced intimacy is fantastic and the main character, Brady, goes through a sexuality awakening as he experiences Cam's (who is gay) memories and emotions. It has so much angst as both of the characters deal through their different traumas and eventually deal with becoming a hive type shared consciousness with an alien, Cam's ex, and Brady's sister, and other soldiers. It was a good balance between sci-fi and romance for me as sometimes too much world-building becomes a chore to read.

podcasts
Good Wood - a hockey fandom podcast with a focus on the pens & sidgeno specifically. Just found this show that's hosted by some fic writers I really enjoy and it is furthering my brainrot for sure...
Stretch and Fade - tmg studios new show with Noel & Hunter from MeatCanyon, just the first episode has been released so far and it's going to be more media analysis which I always enjoy from Noel and it should be funny. It's interesting to see him without Cody too and the different vibe and comedy it will bring out
